After Alex Murdaugh‘s double murder trial, a painting of his grandpa was restored to the Colleton County Courthouse.
Judge Clifton Newman requested that the artwork of Randolph “Buster” Murdaugh Jr. be removed during the six-week trial. Randolph Murdaugh Jr. served as the 14th Circuit Solicitor, a post held by a Murdaugh family member for more than eight decades.
The court emphasized his family’s legal heritage in the community while sentencing Alex Murdaugh, who was convicted of killing his wife Maggie, and son Paul.
“You have a wife that was murdered,” Newman said. “A son was brutally killed. A lawyer, a member of a well-known family who has ruled over justice in this town for over a century.
A guy whose grandfather’s photograph stands in the rear of the courtroom, which I had to have removed to ensure a fair trial.”
Murdaugh was condemned to two consecutive life terms in jail.
