4.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off Malibu, Los Angeles

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake occurred early Wednesday off the coast of Malibu, causing significant shaking around the Southern California coast and inland areas while many people slept.

According to US Geological Survey records, the earthquake occurred around 2 a.m. At 2:03 a.m., a magnitude 3.5 aftershock followed the original earthquake.

At 2:22 a.m. and 2:38 a.m., respectively, aftershocks of magnitude 2.8 and 2.6 were detected.

It was roughly 10 miles south of Malibu, 15 miles southwest of Santa Monica, 15.4 miles west of Venice, and 16.3 miles west of El Segundo.

It was approximately 2 kilometers deep.

Shaking was observed in Malibu, Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and other coastal neighborhoods, as well as sections of Los Angeles’ South Bay and San Fernando Valley, as well as other regions of LA and Southern California.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was in earthquake mode, with teams undertaking a strategic inspection of all 106 neighborhoods and analyzing important areas of concern, such as transportation infrastructures, big gathering places, apartment complexes, and power lines. 

Earthquake mode will be completed in less than an hour once the survey from the ground, air, and sea is completed and results are consolidated.
