Raiders Fire Luke Getsy: After losing 2–7, the Raiders dismiss offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and two other offensive coaches.

In a lopsided defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders benched Gardner Minshew in favor of Desmond Ridder, marking another quarterback move.

They have now made significant changes to their offensive staff, dismissing quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, offensive line coach James Cregg, and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy only hours after the team’s season-ending 2-7 record.

The 40-year-old Getsy was playing his debut season with the Raiders under new coach Antonio Pierce, who was the team’s temporary manager for the last nine games of the 2023 season.

The Raiders were rated 26th in scoring and 28th in total offense going into Sunday’s game against the Bengals. After a protracted summer of competition, Minshew and second-year signal-caller Aidan O’Connell used to split time under center, but they have been plagued by quarterback problems all season.

Although Pierce did not promise to retain the rookie quarterback going forward, Ridder, who was just signed off the Cardinals’ practice squad in late October, ended Sunday’s game as the starting quarterback.

Before moving to Las Vegas, Getsy was the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears for two seasons. During that time, he was criticized for getting erratic performance out of former first-round quarterback Justin Fields.

He is most renowned for his work with the Green Bay Packers, where he was the quarterbacks coach and coordinator of the passing game for Aaron Rodgers from 2020 to 2021, when Rodgers earned consecutive NFL MVP awards.

Getsy was fired after only nine games, which ranks him one of the fastest-firing assistants in NFL history. In 2008, the Arizona Cardinals fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy after just seven games.

According to NFL Media, passing game coordinator Scott Turner is a contender to replace him as offensive play-caller.

Also in their debut seasons with Las Vegas were Cregg and Scangarello. Cregg, 51, was the San Francisco 49ers’ assistant offensive line coach for the two seasons before.

Before joining the Raiders in 2022, 52-year-old Scangarello was offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky. He most recently served as offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2019.
