Madison Mogen was a 21-year-old senior when she was assassinated on November 13, 2022, in Moscow, Idaho.

“She meant everything to us,” her father, Ben Mogen, said during a memorial ceremony for all four pupils in December.

Mogen, often known as Maddie, was one of four University of Idaho students slain just before Thanksgiving. Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Wash., Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum were among those involved.

Bryan Kohberger, a WSU graduate student, has been accused of their killings after investigators discovered a knife sheath with DNA on it.

Mogen, from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, majored in marketing, was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, and worked at Kernodle’s Crazy Greek restaurant.

Her relatives wrote about Mogen in her obituary published in the Coeur d’Alene Press:

“To say Maddie is well-liked by everyone would be an understatement. Maddie was recognized for her ability to make others grin and laugh with her unique and wonderful sense of humor — and everyone who knew her knew not to let her go hungry!”

Mogen was running a social media campaign for the restaurant utilizing her marketing expertise. According to family friend Jessie Frost, she adored the color pink and wanted to relocate to Boise after graduation this spring.

She and Goncalves had grown up as close friends in Northern Idaho.

“They were sisters; she was one of us,” Goncalves’ mother remarked during her son’s funeral.

Mogen’s father stated that the two had been inseparable since sixth grade.

“They were actual sisters, and our families got bigger and better as a result,” Ben Mogen remarked.

Jacob Schriger, Maddie Mogen’s boyfriend, also spoke at the ceremony and stated that the couple had been together for two years.

“Maddie was my closest companion. She was the first person I spoke to in the morning and the final person I spoke to before going to bed “Schriger explained.

What occurred on the night of the murders?

Mogen and Goncalves were at the Corner Club in central Moscow on the night the four students were murdered.

They were subsequently observed at the Grub Truck, a neighboring food truck, at 1:40 a.m., before being driven home by a private party. They arrived just after 1:45 a.m.

The four kids were slain between 4 a.m. and 4:25 a.m., according to investigators.

Responding officers discovered Mogen and Goncalves on the bed in Goncalves’ room on the third level of the house. Both of them had been stabbed.
